Smudge sticks are one of the very special and unique items that we sell at our online shop. These locally-made items have the purpose of creating a nurturing, peaceful and cleansed space in the home. But there’s a lot more to these naturally beautiful items than what meets the eye.

The smudge sticks at our store are made by a Garden Route local named Cari. The base of all of her smudge sticks is impepho, also known as African sage. She harvests everywhere in her surroundings in Rondevlei on the Garden Route. All of the herbs such as the wild rosemary grows naturally around her property.

What are smudge sticks?

Essentially, a smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs that are bound by a string. These sticks are used in the practice of smudging, the process of burning the dried bundle to produce a cleansing cloud of smoke.

What to use smudge sticks for?

While smudging is typically a ceremonial practice, it’s become an everyday occurrence in many situations. There are various benefits of burning sage, and here are just a few;

  • The antimicrobial and antibacterial properties are considered purifying
  • It may help relieve symptoms of some conditions such as asthmas, allergies and other respiratory conditions
  • Smudging can be a spiritual tool that enhances intuition
  • It can help dispel negative energy and provide a positive environment for meditation
  • Smudging can improve your mood and soothe stress
  • It can improve the quality of sleep
  • There may be a benefit of boosting cognition and energy levels

How to use a smudge stick?

The first step to using a smudge stick is to only burn as much as you need. It’s a common misconception to burn the whole stuck, but always remember that a little goes a long way.

Make sure that you have all of your instruments ready. Something to hold the sage smudge stick and catch its ashes, a feather (or alternative) to disperse the smoke throughout the space and a flame of sorts to light the stick.

Walk around the room where you want to add a positive mood, fanning the smoke as the stick burns. In the traditional, spiritual manner of smudging, you’d start with an area that feels negative to you. While doing so, you can set your positive intentions.

Take as much time as you need, burning as much of the stick as you want. Sometimes, you only need a few minutes. In other instances, it may take you longer. Ensure your intentions are clear and focus on cleansing, purifying and healing.
