The Zoe Project and #masksformoms initiative

June 03, 2020 2 min read

At Mzansi Masks, we believe in coming together as a nation in an effort to alleviate the struggles brought on by COVID-19. We support organizations that selflessly work for the greater good of the community and have selected a number of organisations to collaborate with. The Zoe Project is dedicated to changing lives through maternal healthcare.

The Zoe Project

Established in 2002, The Zoe Project is a community-based organisation that provides maternal health care programs supporting vulnerable women, girls and babies in the Western Cape. Their offerings include counselling, Doula services, feeding schemes as well as antenatal and mother and babies education classes.

The Zoe Project supports around 10,000 disadvantaged and vulnerable women, girls and infants from the Retreat, Mowbray and Hanover Park communities, particularly those affected by poverty, violence and substance abuse.

During COVID-19, they’re extending their offerings to help keep mothers safe from infection during a fragile time.

Mowbray Maternity Ward

One of the projects that are making a true difference during these difficult times is the volunteers at Mowbray Hospital, as well as Retreat and Hanover Park maternity units.

The project involves collecting masks for their #masksformoms initiative. So far, the group has collected more than 2,450 masks for vulnerable mothers but the need is great and there are thousands of patients walking through the doors each month.

They share their vision;

“Our vision is to give each person entering the hospital their own mask - these will be utilised when they give birth or attend our Antenatal and Postnatal classes, thus limiting the spread of the Covid-19 Virus amongst patients and staff. This will be particularly beneficial for our front line volunteers that are of immense value to our organisation.”

How Can You Help?

The Zoe Project can use your help to make a difference. Every Friday, the organization does a mask drop off. The masks need to be individually wrapped for protective purposes before being handed over to the Mowbray Hospital.

Mzansi Masks supports the #masksformoms initiative and has donated Mzansi Masks.
