Children have been a topic of debate during COVID-19 regarding their “carrier” abilities.

We recently spoke to a paediatrician in KwaZulu-Natal, who is also a Mzansi Mask client, about how it has been working in the medical space during such a challenging time.

How have you been coping with COVID-19 in a personal capacity?

COVID 19 has been a life-changing experience personally and professionally. There is a lot of anxiety around being at work and the risks thereof but also the knowledge that this is the path I have chosen and I have an obligation to be there for patients and children especially.

How has work/business been affected by COVID-19 - is it business as usual?

Work has changed dramatically as we have had to empty wards to make way for the tsunami of patients we are expecting as we head to the peak. Consultations and ward rounds take much longer as we have to be extra cautious.

What is the general sentiment towards masks in the hospital workplace?

Masks are undeniably imperative in the fight against COVID-19 - the evidence is irrefutable.

As a Pediatrician working with children - what are your thoughts on children wearing masks during COVID?

Children over the age of 2 years should be wearing masks. Parents and care-givers should encourage, educate, and try to make wearing masks "fun" and "unthreatening”.

What measures have you taken to ensure safety for yourself, your employees/colleagues, and your family?

Masks, social-distancing, sanitising and hand-washing.

How have you enjoyed your Mzansi Masks?

They are great, comfortable, versatile and easy to wash and wear.

What is the first thing that you will do once lockdown is over?

Dip my feet in the ocean.

While there are many uncertainties during this time, one thing is for sure - that it’s better to be safe than sorry. From the words of a paediatrician, children over the age of 2 years old should be wearing masks for their safety and the safety of others.
